Demo Reel Intro
Demo Reel Intro [2007]: Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects

I modified the heart and created the wings in illustrator, then split the heart into layers and created the background and my name in Photoshop.  It was all composited and animated in After Effects using filters and expressions. The text is used as a wipe to reveal the next clip.

Convocations 2007
Convocations Season Preview Intro [2007]: InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects

We were asked to make the look and feel of the intro fit the Convocations season brochure. It was provided to us as an InDesign file. We used that to pull elements and images for the animated opener to the season preview. The season is split into several series and each one has a title. We decided to highlight the titles in the opener. I created a single long comp containing all the series titles in photoshop. I imported that into After Effects and set up z-depth for every layer. JC Trombley roughly animated the camera movement. I then took that file and refined all the camera movement and animated all the individual layers and lights. The entire opener was created in 3 working days.

YL Dodgeball
Young Life Dodgeball Commercial [2006]: Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro

I was asked to make a 30 second promo for Young Life clubs to promote an upcoming dodgeball tournament. I worked with Matt Wallace on the piece. We shot the footage at a local park on DV. Matt did the voice over work and sang the song at the end of the piece. I edited the audio in Audition and the footage in Premiere Pro. I also created all the graphics for the piece in After Effects using a stock explosion and Zaxwerks for the 3D text.

Brad Paisley DVD Menu
Brad Paisley DVD Menus [2005]: Photoshop, After Effects, Encore

I wanted this to have the menus embedded together in one large comp so when you selected a menu you would see the camera pan across the DVD's other menus. I began by laying everything out in Photoshop on a grid that was 9 4x3 boxes. The one still photograph was taken by Scott Scovill and the grungy guitar and amp were done by Stu Robinson, a collaborator on the entire DVD. I created the entire comp in Photoshop and animated it all within After Effects. All the slides and photos have video from the concert composited into them. I then assembled the entire working menu in Encore and burned a reference DVD for BMG to use when assembling the final retail version.

Basketball Highlights
Men's Basketball Highlight Reel [2006]: Photoshop, After Effects

I was asked by Scott Horton, the editor of the piece, to include a film element when making the player headshots. I used Photoshop to create the layers and nameplates along with the player photos in the film. I used a Photoshop action to copy and replace the photo of the player into every frame of the film. I used After Effects to create the 3D motion of the camera and composite the film burn-through to reveal the player ID. I created all 12 IDs from concept to completion in one work day.

2003 Football Headshot
Football Headshot [2003]: Pen and Paper, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, After Effects

We used a football comic theme over 3 seasons. This was the motion headshot for the 2nd year we did the theme. I drew the background panels and the background behind the player on paper and inked it, then scanned and colored it in Photoshop. JC Trombley penciled the player behind the info and I inked it. JC colored it. We made roughly 24 covers for 24 different players that year splitting the workload on coloring them (you can see more covers here). JC modeled the headshot machine in 3D Studio Max and I animated it. I laid out the composition in Photoshop. I then took the green screen footage into After Effects, chroma keyed it and then composited and animated the final piece. The whole thing is keyed to come over live football footage.

Football Fire-Up Video
Football Fire up Video [2005]: Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, After Effects, Premiere Pro

The client wanted an old newsreel look to the opener of the fire up video. We decided to model the look after a famous studio opener. JC Trombley modeled and animated the clock tower and earth in 3D Studio Max. I then took the rendered footage and composited it together in After Effects, adding the clouds, radio rings, text and aged film look. The entire piece was edited by me and Scott Horton in Premiere Pro. We would take turns cutting in shots when one would become tired or stuck. The whole fire up video took a few work days to create. I also made a series of propaganda style posters that were used in the edit. They were created with photos I took of the players and Photoshop. Here's a link to some of them.

Lively Arts
Convocations Season Preview Titles [2005]: Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects

JC Trombley and I created these title slides for convocations to highlight when the season preview video moved from one series to another. We edited the logos in Illustrator, designed the comp in Photoshop and animated it with an alpha in After Effects. They were outputted for use on an Avid. Again everything was designed to match the look of that year's season brochure.

Fan Fair Screendress
Fan Fair Music Festival Screen Dress [2004]: Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, After Effects

This is a logo to dress the screens between acts at the Fan Fair CMA Music Festival. I edited the provided logos in Illustrator, brought the paths into 3D Studio Max and animated the 3D logo. The stars in the background were also created in 3D Studio Max. I edited the background in Photoshop and composited everything in After Effects.

Convocations Season Preview Intro [2006]: Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects

We were asked to make the opener for the the 2006-07 convos season. Again we followed the look and color scheme of the brochure. We split the intro into a few parts and each worked on our respective portion, then put the whole thing together into one comp. I created the opening part and the quad box part (third section). JC Trombley created the trumpet part (second section) and the flower part (fourth section). I then took all four parts and assembled them and created the final title graphic on the end.

Fast P Transition
Purdue Athletics "Fast P" Transition [2005]: Illustrator, 3D Studio Max, After Effects

JC Trombley and I created the P in illustrator and imported the splines into 3D Studio Max and animated it. We then used After Effects to composite the rendered 3D footage onto a background that was created by David Charney. The graphic is keyable and used to transition from live footage to graphics or replays during Purdue athletic events.

Tiller Ring
Purdue Football Fire Up Video [2004]: Pen and Paper, Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, After Effects.

I started this shot by taking footage of the coach and finding a frame for him to end on. JC Trombley then drew over that frame and scanned the drawing into the computer and colored it in photoshop. I made the stadium in 3D Studio Max and textures were made in Photoshop. I created the P shape in Illustrator and then animated in 3D Studio Max. I then used After Effects to composite and animate effects for the live footage, 3D stadium, sky, drawn images, 3D ring, and Robot. JC and I had 2 weeks to create a 4 minute animated opener. This shot was done in about 1 and a half days.

Challenge DVD Menu
Challenge Conference DVD Menus [2006]: Photoshop, After Effects, Premier Pro, Encore

I made these menus for a 9 DVD box set that covered an entire week long conference. I edited the clips for the chapter select portion of the DVD in Premiere Pro, then brought all the elements into After Effects and assembled them. I used a camera in 3D space to do all the transitions. The DVD was created in Encore. Click here to see some examples of the box and disc art I made. All 9 DVDs and artwork were completed in a week.

1984
1984 Commercial [2007]: Photoshop, After Effects

We were asked to make this 30 second spot for Convocations. JC Trombley and I split the commercial into two parts and then assembled them together at the end. I created the background and scan lines in After Effects and gave that to JC who created the first half of the commercial. That being all the typing text up to the flash of images. I made the second half from the flashing images to the end. I then took JC's part and my part and put them together and applied a final look to the entire piece. The audio was made in Vegas by Ken Baker.

Pimp My Trike
Pimp My Trike Intro [2006]: Photoshop, After Effects

This opener is a spoof of "Pimp My Ride" I made for Young Life. It was modeled after the actual show's opener. We shot the entire spoof in a day. I made the graphics and edited it in Premiere Pro that same evening. The opener graphics were created in Photoshop and then animated in After Effects. The theme music is from the show on MTv.

2006 Football Headshot
Football Headshot [2006]: Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, After Effects

This is one of the headshots for the 2006 football season. The ID wing and number was modeled and animated by JC Trombley in 3D Studio Max. The textures were made by Scott Horton in Photoshop. I keyed the HDV player footage and composited it together with the 3D files in After Effects. We then added a background and supporting text. The text above the ID wing was also created in After Effects. The 3D files only contained the number and wing.

JC Trombley created the trumpet part (second section) and the flower part (fourth section). I then took all four parts and assembled them and created the final title graphic on the end.

Football Announcements
Football Stadium Announcements [2005]: Photoshop, After Effects

I was asked to make a series of announcements to air in the stadium during football games. The idea was to create emergency information signs that you may have seen during war time. Like a fallout shelter sign for example. I created all the images in Photoshop and then Scott Horton animated the lights in After Effects. The music was provided live during the game from the Purdue marching band.

Center Stage

I made this as part of a promo DVD highlighting Kenneth Lowe's accomplishments during his tenure as a Purdue basketball player. They were sent to potential recruiters and awards judges. Everything was created in Photoshop and then animated in After Effects. We developed a poster idea as well, but it was never used. You can see it here. JC Trombley drew Kenneth Lowe and colored him and I made the name plate from scratch in Photoshop.

I inked and colored both the background and player in Photoshop. I made the circle spin towards the camera in 3D Studio Max and created the textures in Photoshop. I assembled everything and animated it in After Effects. It's a keyable graphic.

Robot
Purdue Football Fire Up Video [2004]: Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Kaydara Motion Builder

The model was purchased online and skinned and boned in 3D Studio Max by one of the Computer Graphics faculty. We shot all the movement using a STT 6-Point optical motion capture system. All the information was recorded in Kaydara Motion Builder. I smoothed out the animation and adjusted points in the software, then exported it into 3D Studio Max to further refine the animation and texture the robot. I also modeled and animated the stadium. The pieces were rendered separately and composited in After Effects by me.
